Wet winter fuels Western Australia’s Murchison wildflower bloom

Wildflowers spread across parts of Western Australia’s Murchison region after wetter-than-usual winter months, NASA’s Earth Observatory reported on September 23. The region lies about 600 kilometres north of Perth.

Landsat 8 images taken on August 19, 2025, and August 30, 2026, show a shift from drier ground to greener vegetation. NASA cites Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology for above-average rainfall in June and much-above-average rainfall in August in the area.

Local observers described this as possibly the strongest wildflower display in nearly two decades, according to NASA. That comparison is their assessment, not a measured regional record.
