Emirates News Agency in Abu Dhabi reported on 3 October that Google's first Project Suncatcher prototype had launched two days earlier on the Transporter-18 mission from California. Developed with Planet, the satellite is designed to test how Google tensor processing units withstand launch stress, radiation, extreme temperatures and cooling in a vacuum.\n\nThe mission is a research test, not an operating AI data centre and not proof that a commercial orbital system is feasible. Google says the wider project is exploring whether future machine-learning infrastructure could use the more continuous solar energy available in low Earth orbit. A separate two-satellite laser-link experiment is planned for 2027 and remains a future test.

Google sends Project Suncatcher prototype into orbit for AI hardware tests
The experimental satellite will measure how Google TPUs handle radiation, launch stress and cooling in space; it is not an operational orbital data centre.
